7am...
The garbage truck beeps as it backs up
And I start my day thinking about what I’ve thrown away...
Could I push rewind?
The credits traverse signifying the end
But I missed the best part
Could we please go back to start?
Forgive my indecision
Then again, then again, then again,
You’re always first when no one's on your side...
Then again, then again, then again,
The day will come when I want off that ride
11am
By now you would think that I would be up
But my bed sheets shade the heat of choices I've made....
What did I find?
I never thought I could want someone so much
Cause now you’re not here
And I’m knee deep in my own fear
Forgive my indecision...
I am only a man...
Then again, then again, then again,
You’re always first when no one’s on your side...
Then again, then again, then again,
The day will come when I want off that ride
12 pm and my dusty telephone rings...
Heavy head up from my pillow who, could it be?
I hope its you
It's you
Then again, then again, then again,
You’re always first when no one’s on your side...
Then again, then again, then again,
The day has come and I want off that ride
Nun der Essay:
Having thrown away what you love
Incubus – 11am
The power of this song is that it can help people get through difficult times by allowing listeners to identify with its healing message. The song is about a man who recently broke up with his girlfriend and regrets it deeply. This simple theme is transformed into a message of inspiration in the lyrics.
The first three lines of the song are exquisitely poetic. They allude both to the literal and the metaphoric. On the one hand, the beeping of the garbage truck outside is real. On the other hand, this image symbolizes the tragedy of having “thrown away” the relationship. These lines also create a very powerful yet everyday image: lying in bed only to awaken to the noise of the chaos going on outside and being unable to get up because there are too many thoughts oppressing one’s movement.
The chorus is particularly moving. Its sarcastic description of coping with a breakup is one which mirrors the experience of many people. Once finding oneself alone again after a relationship ends, people suddenly have no one else to consider and “you’re always first”.
Sadly this fact is not enjoyable but devastating which is expressed by the desperate sarcasm. Although people try to believe they are better off without the partner anyway, at the same time they are intensely aware of the sad truth: one day they will want their lovers back, one day they will be willing to give up their pride.
An unusual feature in this song is the constant reference to concrete times at the very beginning of each stanza. These references point to the fact that life isn’t as it used to be anymore. For example, in the line “By now you would think that I would be up…” it is obvious that the person’s normal day has been destroyed. Instead, the lyric “I” prefers to stay in bed in order to avoid facing the reality of being alone.
As the day passes, the narrator is still unable to do anything. The feeling of futility is reflected in the image of the “dusty telephone” ringing in the last stanza. First this image represents how desperately the person is waiting for the lost love to call. At the same time, the dust indicates that the breakup already happened some time ago. The unused telephone has become dusty over time. The dust also implies that he probably hasn’t talked to anyone else due to his confusion and depression.
In conclusion, it is important to stress that everyone experiences relationships and love in totally different ways. Nevertheless it is still possible to relate to the experience of others. This commonality is demonstrated by the general ability of listeners to appreciate the lyrics of this song and draw comparisons to their own lives.
This is what makes the song so brilliant.
