They're valuable later in the game for giving nearby units a boost. The warlike Iroquois war chief gives his troops a hit point bonus, while the Sioux war chief improves unit speed for faster raiding.

The Native Americans have a new unit called a travois that can be cashed in for a free building. They also have a special structure called a fire pit. They can assign villagers to the fire pit to dance around in a circle and give units a global bonus. The more dancing villagers, the higher the bonus. The dance can be switched depending on the situation. For instance, one dance improves the rate you earn experience, another dance increases training speed, and yet another raises your population capacity.
