Americans are reminded to remain vigilant with regard to their personal security and to exercise caution.
Austrian intelligence experts have registered increased radicalization of immigrant Muslim individuals and of small conspiratorial groups, as well as intensified use of the Internet as a propaganda and communications platform. Despite some terrorism-related incidents in 2007 directed against individual Austrian nationals or the Government of Austria, authorities overall believe the likelihood of terrorist attacks in Austria remains relatively low; the State Department rates Austria as a “Medium” threat for transnational terrorism.

Although there have been no recent terrorist attacks in Switzerland, violence by anti-globalization, anti-Semitic, and anti-establishment (anarchist) groups does occur from time to time. This violence is typically in the form of property damage and clashes between these groups and the police. The potential for specific threats of violence involving American citizens in Switzerland is remote. Nevertheless, the Consular Agencies in Zurich and Geneva may close periodically to assess their security situation.
SAFETY AND SECURITY: German authorities remain vigilant in combating the threat posed by foreign and resident extremists. Specific threats have been uncovered and persecutions undertaken, though Germany itself has been largely free of terror incidents. However, like other countries in the Schengen area, Germany’s open borders with its European neighbors allow the possibility of dangerous individuals entering/exiting the country with anonymity. Germany regularly experiences demonstrations on a variety of political and economic themes. Prior police approval is required for public demonstrations, and police oversight is routinely provided for participants and passersby. Nonetheless, these demonstrations can attract counter-demonstrators and have the potential to turn violent. In addition, hooligans, most often young intoxicated “skinheads” have been known to harass or even attack people whom they believe to be foreigners or members of rival groups. On occasion, American have reported that they were assaulted for racial reasons or because they appeared “foreign.” All Americans are cautioned to avoid the area around protests and demonstrations and to check local media for updates on the situation.

Die Sicherheitssituation kann in den gesamten USA seit dem 11.09.2001 als angespannt bezeichnet werden. Das Unvermögen, terroristische Aktivitäten mit 100%er Sicherheit vorherzusagen, hat zu einem latenten Bedrohungsgefühl geführt. Das Trauma des 11. September 2001 ist in den USA noch lange nicht überwunden und wirft seine Schatten auch auf das europäische Sicherheitsgefühl. Trotzdem muß nach rationaler Einschätzung der Lage die Sicherheitssituation in den USA als hochstehend bezeichnet werden. Sicherheitsvorkehrungen landesweit, vor allem im Flugverkehr, haben zu bisweilen als störend empfundenen Kontrollen geführt, die jedoch rein der zusätzlichen Sicherheit der Bürger und Reisenden dienen soll. Die Sicherheitsverhältnisse haben sich in den amerikanischen Großstädten verschlechtert. Stark im Ansteigen begriffen sind vor allem Eigentumsdelikte wie Einbruchsdiebstähle, Raubüberfälle, Autodiebstähle sowie Vergewaltigungen. Es sollte daher nur wenig Bargeld mitgeführt werden, Dokumente sollten photokopiert werden. Besondere Vorsicht ist nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit geboten.
Auch die Sicherheitssituation in der Hauptstadt Washington DC muss derzeit als besorgniserregend eingestuft werden. Bewaffnete Überfälle auf Touristen haben sich in jüngster Zeit auch in bisher sicheren Stadtteilen sowie im Bereich der "Mall" und der großen Museen gehäuft. Reisenden, die Washington und seine Sehenswürdigkeiten besuchen wollen, wird daher angeraten, keine größere Bargeldmengen sowie maximal nur eine Kreditkarte bei sich zu führen. Von touristischen Einzelexpeditionen in die südöstlichen und südwestlichen Stadtteile Washingtons wird dringend abgeraten.
