In the old days in Hollywood there was a puritanical rule that in 'bedroom' scenes the two stars were always to have at least one foot on the floor. This was to ensure that there was no real hanky panky going on. The women stars took the p*ss out of the studio execs by ONLY having one foot on the floor whenever an even slightly romantic encounter was filmed.
The cameras were a lot less sophisticated too and could only move up/down and side to side, rather than traverse diagonally. So when a kiss was being filmed the cameraman had to be careful where the lens was pointed. The male stars would regularly have fun with the camera operators in kissing scenes by slipping their hands under the female star's dress and stroking her between the legs. (it was the 'method' acting way of ensuring passion in kissing) As the camera op could not pan back without showing what was going on, nor linger on the kiss ( which could not be shown beyond 4 seconds - another rule) the only place he could point the lens was at the woman's foot.
In time movie afectionados, like me, got to know that whenever a scene showed a woman's foot it meant she was getting a bit of finger.
