These indigenous newcomers to the game get their "cards" from Tribal Councils. Instead of a bustling Old World city, the home city screen shows a few guys sitting around in a teepee. The Natives have their own unique cards, but the Europeans will each get a few new home city cards as well. They'll also get new units and buildings, such as the saloon that lets them recruit mercenaries.
The expansion is named after the war chiefs, who are the considerably more powerful equivalents of the Europeans' explorers. But whereas the explorers become less useful as a game went on, the war chiefs are important throughout. In the early game, they can convert treasure guardians like bears and wolves to fight with them. They have powerful special attacks that can kill multiple units instantly. They're valuable later in the game for giving nearby units a boost. The warlike Iroquois war chief gives his troops a hit point bonus, while the Sioux war chief improves unit speed for faster raiding.
The Native Americans have a new unit called a travois that can be cashed in for a free building. They also have a special structure called a fire pit. They can assign villagers to the fire pit to dance around in a circle and give units a global bonus. The more dancing villagers, the higher the bonus. The dance can be switched depending on the situation. For instance, one dance improves the rate you earn experience, another dance increases training speed, and yet another raises your population capacity.
